Steinmeir takes 300 hurdles race at Falcon Relays on split squad night

Chandler Steinmeir continued a strong start to the season, taking individual gold in the 300-meter hurdles during the Falcon Relays on Thursday night at North Kansas City District Activities Complex.

A junior, Steinmeir turned in a time of 42.04 seconds, less than a second off his personal best and more than a second faster than runnerup Ethan Smith, a senior from Oak Park. Steinmeir also placed fifth in the 110 hurdles.

With throwers not at the meet, Platte County’s other best finishes mostly came in field events.

Joey Schultz, a senior, cleared 1.82 meters in the high jump to tie for second and took that spot on tiebreakers. Javion Byers, a senior from Liberty, won the event at 1.88 meters.

Platte County sophomore Chandavian Bradley impressed again in the triple jump, finishing second at 12.40 meters and coming in behind Byers. Bradley didn’t limit his performances to the field and also placed fifth in the 200 (24.45, just 0.36 of a second out of first).

In a more unexpected showing, Platte County junior Victor Sewankambo grabbed second in the long jump at 6.12 meters. The Pirates other top finishes in running events included junior Andrw Early coming in sixth in the 1,600 at 4:47.32.

There were nine teams total at that meet, the majority in Class 5 with Platte County and Kearney the lone Class 4 schools.

Platte County also hosted its Flight Night on Thursday night at Platte County High School. Kearney and Basehor-Linwood also brought throwers to compete in shot put, javelin and discus.

In the shot put, Platte County senior Dylan Montes (13.61 meters) finished second to Kearney’s KJ Smith, who also won the discus. The Pirates also had third-place finishers in the discus (sophomore Cameron Wolfe, 40.40 meters) and javelin (senior Tryce Brooks, 35.27 meters).
