Platte County dominates Belton in tuneup dual ahead of COMO Invitational

Hokanson, Smith, Jonkman and Gutshall all record individual victories for Pirates, while Guzman features in all 3 1st-place relays.

Platte County swimmers won eight of 12 events in Tuesday’s quick dual with Belton at Platte County Community Center North — the final tuneup ahead of this weekend’s COMO Invitational.

There were no new state consideration times for the Class 1 MSHSAA Swimming and Diving Championships, but Platte County did have 504 points to Belton’s 308. Platte County finished first in all three relays, while seniors Jack Hokanson (200-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke) and Finn Smith (100-yard backstroke), sophomore Beau Jonkman (100-yard butterfly) and freshman Grisham Gutshall (100-yard freestyle) also recorded victories in individual events.

The top four for Platte County in each relay weren’t grouped in any of those races. Instead, junior Nathan Guzman teamed with Jonkman, Gutshall and Smith to win the 200 medley in 1 minute, 57.85 seconds while the team of Guzman, Gutshall, Hokanson and Jonkman came in first in the 200 freestyle in 1 minute, 42.46 seconds. Guzman, Hokanson and Smith were with senior Jacopo Rossetto — an exchange student from Italy — in the 400 freestyle relay that posted a winning time of 4:17.69.
