Platte County continues to stack wins with blowout of St. Pius X

Entering holiday break with 5 straight victories, Pirates sit just one off their total from all of last season thanks to current hot stretch.

Platte County may very well wish the holiday break didn’t hit. The Pirates pushed their winning streak to five with an emphatic 51-31 romp over St. Pius X on Wednesday at Platte County High School but now must wait until after the New Year to see if the momentum holds.

With questions about consistent scoring, Platte County continued to find varied ways to create production. This time, Pirates senior forward Reese Pickett breaking out of an offensive funk to put up a team-high 15 points, while rapidly developing sophomore forward Addy Schlake added 12 points and seven rebounds.

St. Pius X hung close most of the way before losing touch in the fourth quarter.

Platte County (7-2) again looked efficient on offense, shooting 45 percent from the floor and making 4 of 8 3-point attempts. Pirates junior Lydia Doole hit a pair of 3s and finished with eight points and five assists, while senior forward Joslyn Hupp saw her string of double-digit scoring performances end at four but still finished with six points and a team-high eight rebounds.

The other two scorers for Platte County were sophomore Lauren Stone and Haley Barlow with five points apiece.

Coming off a string of three straight losing seasons, Platte County opened the first campaign under the direction of first-year head coach Eric Mitchell alternating wins and losses through the first four games. The Pirates have since run off the five straight victories that includes avenging losses from 2021-22 against Lafayette (St. Joseph) and Van Horn plus an impressive double-digit win over Smithville ahead of the matchup with St. Pius X.

Platte County returns to action Tuesday at home vs. Raytown in a Suburban Conference White Division matchup. The Pirates’ next victory will match their win total from all of last season.
