Platte County closes out 1st half of season by topping team standings at 2 meets

Hays tops individual showings, while battle for spots on state-bound relays continues.

Platte County closed out the 2022 portion of the season with a triangular Wednesday in Belton, recording four victories and closely outpointing the hosts and Raymore-Peculiar.

Lauren Beatty, a senior, led a 1-2 finish for Platte County in the 50-yard freestyle in 28.41 seconds with fellow senior Madeline Judy right behind at 28.64. The only new individual Class 1 Missouri State Swimming and Diving Championships consideration cut came from junior Brooklynn Hays, who won the 100 butterfly in 1:04.68. She also placed first in the 200 freestyle (2:04.81).

Platte County’s other victory came in the 200 freestyle relay (1:52.98) with Beatty, Hays, Judy and sophomore Madeleine Stone each swimming a leg. The Pirates totaled 407 points with Raymore-Peculiar at 394 and Belton at 387.

Platte County went into the holiday break with five event victories out of 12 in a five-team home meet on Tuesday, December 20 at Platte County Community Center North. The Pirates scored 456 points and finished ahead of Raymore-Peculiar, Kearney, Savannah and Smithville.

Notably, Platte County senior Drew DeLay turned in a season-best 26.48 in the 50 freestyle to improve her Class 1 seed time in the event. She finished second to Savannah senior Makenzie Kurre. DeLay also placed second in the 100 freestyle (59.48).

Hays came in first in the 100 freestyle (56.10) and made it two individual victories by exactly matching her season-best in the 200 IM (2:20.33).

Judy and junior Jayden Benninghoff finished 1-2 in the 100 backstroke. Judy won in 1:12.62, knocking more than 4 seconds off of her previous season-best in the event, while Benninghoff came in at 1:13.02 — about a second off her season-best.

Platte County sophomore Ireland Shank came in second in the 100 breaststroke (1:21.49).

In addition to the individual successes, Platte County also won a pair of relays. The team of DeLay, Judy, Hays and rising freshman Ashleigh Cruce finished in 4:00.89 in the 400 freestyle and 2:01.62 in the 200 medley.
