Mauzey earns all-state honors after phenomenal debut season

Sophomore led Platte County in nearly every offensive category on his way to 1st-team selection as an outfielder on MHSBCA’s Class 5 team.

Forced to wait for a second chance at a first impression, Platte County sophomore Jeter Mauzey didn’t disappoint. The emerging star outfielder/first baseman led the Pirates in nearly every offensive category and earned first team Class 5 Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association all-state honors after his first varsity season.

The cancelation of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic cost Mauzey his freshman year, but he more than made up for lost time.

In an up-then-down season, Platte County went 18-9 overall but bowed out of the Class 5 District 8 tournament in the semifinals. The Pirates featured just five seniors on an inexperienced roster and bolted to an 11-2 start before going 7-7 down the stretch.

Mauzey, who recently committed early to continue his baseball career at Division I New Mexico State, provided the most consistent presence start to finish.

In a nearly impossible statistical outcome, Mauzey ended up with 22 extra-base hits out of his team-high 27 total, registering just five singles. He led Platte County with 11 doubles, four triples and seven home runs while compiling an impressive 37 RBIs and 32 runs scored — also tops on the roster. He led the Pirates with a slash line of a .370 batting average, .500 on-base percentage (16 walks) and .918 slugging percentage for a stunning 1.418 OPS.

Mauzey even stole eight bases.

Platte County placed three players on the 2019 Class 5 all-state team — seniors Ethan Esdohr, Dalton Riechers and Colby Sneed. The state expanded to six classifications this season, and the Pirates remained in Class 5 but no longer were competing in the top tier against the largest schools in the state.
