With a timeout available, Platte County put the ball in the hands of senior quarterback Rocco Marriott — to the surprise of absolutely no one in the overflow crowd at Pirate Stadium. He took a shotgun snap and went right, plowing into the end zone to provide the last of five changes in the second half of Friday’s Class 5 District 8 championship game and the first-ever matchup between two of the most historically successful programs in the Kansas City metro.

Platte County survived for a thrilling 29-22 victory over Rockhurst to keep hopes of a second straight state championship alive, extending the state’s longest winning streak to 25. The Pirates drove 66 yards in 1 minute, 36 seconds with Marriott scrambling to the 1-yard line with 6 seconds left, and after using one of two timeouts remaining, he scored on the next play.
The instant classic featured five lead changes — all in a 15-minute span of the second half and the last three in the final 3:38.
“Any doubt? There really wasn’t,” Platte County coach Bill Utz said. “I say that with as much respect as possible. Obviously, they got that late one but with a minute 42 and two timeouts, that’s a lot of time, especially with our ability to break some plays. I’d be lying if I said there was a whole lot of doubt. I felt like we could go down and score.

“With these kids, these kids never cease to amaze me.”
Platte County (11-0) trailed 12-0 at halftime after a lackluster start but scored on four straight possessions to close the game. Marriott finished 17 of 30 for 184 yards with a pair of touchdown passes — both in the third quarter to give the Pirates their first lead. He also rushed for a season-high 131 yards on 20 carries with two rushing scores in the fourth quarter, the first erasing a 15-13 deficit and then the second on the quarterback sweep in a shockingly swift and decisive sequence after Rockhurst went ahead 22-21 with a 69-yard touchdown pass.
Marriott drove Platte County down the field on nine plays to reach the 1 on a series of clutch plays that included a 20-yard completion to senior wide receiver Ty Christopher. On the play before the scramble down to the 1, Rockhurst deflected a pass into the air that Marriott caught and turned into an 8-yard gain. His final two carries went for 10 yards and the game winning scored that delivered the Pirates their second straight district title (fifth in nine years), put them back into the playoffs and set up Friday’s state quarterfinal at Grain Valley (8-3) with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.

“The coaches trusted me, and I love them for that,” Marriott said. “I just knew as soon as they called that play I knew that there was no way I was going to get stopped and I had to go finish the game.”
With only two previous losses to Class 6 district finalists Blue Springs and Liberty North, Rockhurst (9-3) finished with just over 300 yards of offense with nearly half coming on junior quarterback Garret Miller’s two long touchdown passes — a 75-yarder in the first half and the late potential game-winner that nearly secured an upset. The Hawklets led 6-0 after Marriott threw interceptions on two of Platte County’s first five offensive snaps — his first since throwing one late in the first half of a 60-28 win over Washburn Rural (Kansas) in late September. The deficit marked the first for the Pirates since going behind 7-0 in a Week 3 win against Fort Osage last year.
Rockhurst star junior running back Cash Lewandowski finished with just 74 yards rushing on 16 attempts, totaling 44 on his first seven carries and just 30 on his final nine.

Platte County defensive tackle duo of senior Cole Johnson (six tackles, team-high four for loss, and a forced fumble) and junior Kyler Parker (three tackles) plus the starting defensive end duo of senior Cale Buntz (four tackles, three for loss, and five pressures) and junior Brody Hawk (three tackles, one for loss, and three pressures) plus senior rush specialist JoJo Wolo (two tackles, one pressure) harassed Miller into a 14-for-29 passing line. The Pirates’ adjustment to a three-linebacker base formation continued to pay off with the combination of juniors Carlos Baskerville (team-high nine tackles and the lone sack) and Hank Fowler (eight tackles) and senior KJ Stallings (seven tackles, two for loss).
Rockhurst junior wide receiver Blake Thomas finished with just four catches for 20 yards with Platte County seniors Mudiaga Egbedeju (three tackles, four passes defensed) and Adeboye Akande (two tackles, one pass defensed) recording their most important performances since becoming the starting cornerbacks in Week 5. The Pirates’ safety trio of senior Mogie Walkingstick (six tackles) and juniors Matt Cisco (four tackles, one forced fumble) and Jack Johnson (one tackle) playing disciplined roles against a potentially balanced offense that went 2-for-16 on third downs but did convert on all three fourth-down gambles, including two on a critical drive that ultimately resulted in a go-ahead field goal with 8:03 left in regulation.
“(The defense) did a great job of picking us up, absolutely great job,” Marriott said. “I’m so proud of them. The way they progressed from the summer all the way until now — the way they rally around each other, the way we rally around them — it’s really special.”

Platte County’s defense forced a quick initial three-and-out, but after a pair of completions, Marriott’s third pass attempt went wide of senior tight end Brooks Hall, who unfortunately deflected the ball into the air with Thomas — also a starting cornerback — capitalizing to end up with an interception. His 20-yard return set up the Hawklets at the Pirates’ 29-yard line, and a 24-yard run for star junior running back Cash Lewandowski helped set up a goal-to-go situation.
Back up to the 2, Platte County made three straight stops and forced Rockhurst to settle for sophomore Connor Devereux’s 20-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead.
Two plays later, Lewandowski — also a middle linebacker — ranged back into a passing lane for another interception. He rushed for 17 yards on the ensuing drive, which ended with a 31-yard field goal to put Rockhurst up 6-0 with 3:18 left in the first quarter.

“The defense I thought did a tremendous job the first half. Keeping them to two field goals on those short fields is awesome,” Utz said. “We knew we had some stuff to get straightened out. Once we got a couple of plays and some momentum, the game switched really fast.”
Platte County ended up going scoreless in the first half — a first since a 2023 loss to Oak Park. A week after the first three first-half punts of the season, the Pirates kicked the ball away twice in addition to a turnover on downs after driving to Rockhurst’s 21 late in the second quarter and an abbreviated three-play series that went nowhere heading into halftime.
In between, Platte County sent behind two possessions when Miller hit sophomore wide receiver Tristan Johnson for a 75-yard touchdown with 7:07 left before halftime. The Hawklets went for two but failed, leaving the lead at 12-0.
“At halftime, we were off. We were off, and everybody could see that,” Marriott said. “(The defense) did a great job of picking us up.”
After failing to score on the final possession of the first half, Platte County took the opening possession of the third quarter with a chance to establish some momentum.
Instead, Rockhurst (9-3) stopped Marriott on a fourth and 1 with the referees spotting him just short of the line to gain in Hawklets’ territory. The Pirates’ defense came up big again with an immediate three-and-out, but neither team came up with another stop on defense the rest of the way.

Marriott turned the trajectory of the game with a 36-yard throw to Christopher, who came down with a pass in the end zone in between double coverage. The Hawklets blocked the extra point to keep the lead at 12-6 with 3:24 left in the third quarter.
“He made a great play. That’s what really started the momentum,” Marriott said of Christopher, who finished with team-highs of four catches for 61 yards. “That’s what kickstarted our offense. I just trusted him to go make a play and that’s exactly what he did.”
Platte County trailed 12-6 after a blocked extra point. The Pirates then came up with another quick stop after a pair of holding penalties derailed the next Rockhurst drive with Miller nearly throwing an interception on second and long.
On a short bouncing punt, Platte County senior wide receiver Braiden Stevens scooped up the ball and made a return to Rockhurst’s 29. The Hawklets then committed a personal foul on the next play, and Marriott’s second touchdown pass went 14 yards on a well-placed ball to senior tight end Jack Utz. The extra point from junior kicker Sterling Wilson gave the Pirates their first lead at 13-12.
“Huge,” Bill Utz said of Stevens’ punt return. “I’ll go a little bit further. The defense gave us that stop. Rockhurst was playing behind the sticks quite a bit. Special teams is big. Being able to get that punt return is huge.”

Rockhurst responded with a lengthy drive spanning into the fourth quarter that included fourth-down conversions on a run from Lewandowski and a pass from Miller to senior tight end Kevin Sullivan. However, one of Johnson’s tackles for loss eventually forced the Hawklets to settle for Devereux’s third field goal, a 31-yarder to give the Hawklets the 15-13 lead with a little over 8 minutes left in regulation.
After sophomore Hank Marriott fielded a short pooch kick and returned the ball 12 yards, Platte County went back to the ground game with senior running back Adam Gisler carrying five times for 15 of his hard-earned 55 yards, while Rocco Marriott’s 28-yard scramble proved the big play to set up another go-ahead touchdown — this one on his 10-yard sweep left with just 3:38 left in regulation.
Platte County freshman Jayden Horn made a third consecutive start at right guard in between junior right tackle Cooper Koenigsfeld and senior center Lucas Dillingham with fellow seniors Michael Poncavage (guard) and Quinn Lightle (tackle) on the left. The Pirates again went to more designed runs for Rocco Marriott in addition to his creativity on scrambles after doing the same while running for 130 just a week earlier against St. Pius X.

Rocco Marriott spread his completions out to seven different receivers, including himself, with the senior tight end duo of Jack Utz (two for 18 yards) and Brooks Hall (three for 32 yards). Gisler also caught one pass for 14 yards while averaging less than 4 yards a carry on 18 attempts.
“They’re going to try to take away Adam. He’s a special back,” Rocco Marriott said. “And then that really leaves my run game open, and I just have to go make plays. The linemen did a great job of pushing people around, opening up gaps for us, and I’m proud of them.”
Platte County looked on the brink of finishing off the win after a two-point pass to senior wide receiver Tres Baskerville (three catches for 34 yards) stretched the lead to 21-15.
Out of timeouts, Rockhurst faced a fourth and 9, but Miller hung in while taking a wicked shot from Hawk and slung a pass over the middle to junior Warren Robertson, who broke a tackle and went for a 69-yard score to leave the Pirates with a 22-21 deficit and just 1:42 on the clock. According to reports, Miller suffered a potentially serious arm injury before the final drive, and he stayed down on the turf unable to join in the celebration on the Hawklets’ final score that ultimately left Rocco Marriott too much time.

Similar to a win over Smithville in 2023, Rocco Marriott didn’t need much of an opening to complete an even more memorable comeback on a much bigger stage against a battle-tested opponent.
“There’s some really good players over there,” Bill Utz said. “That’s an unbelievably quality opponent. That’s about as good as they come. It was a great test for us to step up in a big spot. These guys were meant to play this game. It’s what they’ve done. I never doubted them. It was just a matter if there was enough time. We had two timeouts and an opportunity.”
“I was just telling everybody, we were talking, we were like, we’ve got to act like, know they’re going to score here. We just have to go down the field and win a game. And that’s what we did,” added Rocco Marriott, who threw a to Stevens as a cap to a three-play, 66-yard drive that took just 23 seconds to erase a one-point deficit and beat Smithville 43-36 in September of 2023.
After Christopher’s short kickoff return, Platte County methodically moved down the field, starting with a 9-yard pass to Hall, without spending either of the available timeouts until Rocco Marriott’s 9-yard scramble to the 1-yard line with 6 seconds on the clock. He delivered a dramatic victory — one of the most memorable in program history — on the next snap, following Gisler’s lead blocking that chipped two Rockhurst defenders into the end zone.

Marriott then completed a two-point conversion pass to Stevens, who totaled three catches for 17 yards but saw a streak of 12 straight games with at least one receiving touchdown come to an end, to provide the final seven-point lead. On the ensuing kickoff, Rockhurst tried five laterals on the return with Cisco slapping away the last and Fowler eventually falling on the loose ball to set up a celebration that seemed equal parts relief and excitement.
“(I’m) good now, but man, I was so scared,” said Carlos Baskerville, who returned an interception for a touchdown the previous week to cap the 42-0 win over St. Pius X. “That last touchdown, that big touchdown they had, that’s on me. I should have been backed up, but it’s a great feeling. This win is a great feeling.”
Platte County’s quest for the fifth state title in program history and second straight in Class 5 continues against a familiar opponent. The Pirates beat Grain Valley 54-23 in Week 2 despite allowing two kickoff returns for touchdowns in the first half.
This marks Platte County’s sixth road playoff game out of the last 10, dating to 2012 and including runs to the state semifinals in 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2024 — the latter three all resulting in trips to the state championship game.
“I’m happy for our kids and happy for our program simply because I’ve heard a lot about how easy our schedule is and all this other stuff,” Bill Utz said. “We’re not just that team. I’m really proud for them that they can say, we can do this again.”
With a win against Grain Valley, Platte County advances to travel to Kirkwood (10-1) in St. Louis or host Farmington (9-2) in a semifinal on Thanksgiving weekend with a spot in the Class 5 Show-Me Bowl at Missouri Western State University’s Spratt Stadium in St. Joseph on the first Friday in December.
