For the second straight year, Beau Jonkman owns a consideration time to qualify for the Class 1 MSHSAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
Platte County’s junior standout won the Purple Division 100-yard backstroke race in this past weekend’s Pirate Invitational at Belton High School. He came in at 1 minutes, 2.56 seconds and now owns the No. 37 posted time in Class 1.
As a sophomore, Jonkman’s career-best of 59.90 did not earn him a spot at state, so work remains to be done.
Jonkman won both the 100 backstroke and 50 freestyle (24.36), helping Platte County finish ninth out of 16 teams. The Pirates were in the small school races which led to limited entries in some events.
Platte County freshman Ethan Morton finished first in a field of two for the 200 individual medley (2:49.90) and added a runnerup finish in the 100 freestyle (58.71). Owen Rowles, a sophomore, added fifth-place showings in the 200 freestyle (2:29.39) and 500 freestyle (6:55.05).
Originally at seven swimmers, Platte County’s roster now sits at 10, but Jonkman owns the only prior state experience, having swam on qualifying relays each of the past two seasons. He just missed a qualifying mark in the 50 freestyle, missing by less 0.20 of a second.

In a quad with Belton, William Chrisman and Truman on Tuesday, Morton won the 200 freestyle (2:14.59) and Platte County finished first in the 200 freestyle relay (2:01.10) at Platte County Community Center North. The Pirates did not add any other state consideration cuts in the second home competition of the season.
