History awaits — no matter the results.
For the first time, Platte County fields a boys volleyball program this spring in the third official year as Missouri State High School Activities Association sanctioned. The Pirates have multiple players with prior club experience, including two years with a school-affiliated team, but little in terms of track record together.
Platte County juniors Joshua Echeverry and Preston Cavan serve as the inaugural captains on a roster of 12.
“A successful season will include helping our players continue their development and, for some, finding opportunities to play at the collegiate level,” Platte County coach Kristi Whitmer said. “Beyond that, we hope to create lasting memories, build strong relationships, and establish a solid foundation for the future of the program. While it’s difficult to predict outcomes in a first season, I have high expectations for this group.”
Whitmer said Echeverry will be a versatile six-rotation outside hitter with the ability to be Platte County’s top offensive option, and Cavan plays libero in the middle of the defense. The Pirates also have senior Bryton Bertram and junior Jokubas Lebedevas bring size at the net.
Platte County junior Kaleb Harris and freshman Cooper Miles are the setters.
The rest of the roster includes seniors Alex Stinson, Westin Summers and William Babcock; junior Drake White; and sophomores Breckyn Liggett and Brody Duncan. The Pirates hosted a jamboree on Thursday night and open the regular season at Saturday’s 28-team Hy-Vee Tournament in Kansas City. Their first home match will be April 8 against Kearney.
Postseason assignments come out Friday, but last season, all teams were in one class and divided between 16 districts.
